Duplicate web page content

Is duplicated web page content matter of life and death for your web site? It could be if you don’t read this article!

According to a “well respected guru” using duplicated web page content on your web site it’s not just acceptable but it’s desirable.

Here is what he says…
  • There are hundreds of web sites whose sole business is to distribute reprint content to web masters in order to bring more traffic and improve page ranking to their web sites.
  • Thousands of web sites who use and supply reprint content have very high page ranking of (PR8), (PR9) and (PR10). He is specifically mentioning news agencies. His argument is…if duplicate content is harmful, how would Page Ranking of these web sites be so high. Why are they not de-indexed?
  • After he started using and distributing reprint web page content his search engine traffic increased dramatically.

He argues that “duplicate content penalty” is just a myth. Then he explains…

The search engines will penalize you if you have multiple pages on your web site with the same or similar content. Or if you duplicate complete web site. Duplicating single pages and distributing them can only bring you more traffic.

He is also of the opinion that the “penalty” is a loaded word.

I just would like to point out that this guru is duplicate content writer.

Now here is a scenario…

You are searching for specific information. You enter a keyword and you land on the search engines results page. You click on the first listing and you read the information provided on that web page. Now you go back and click on the second listing.

To your surprise that web page content is identical as on the previous. So you click on third fourth and every listing on the page and you realize that all the pages belong to different web sites but have same web page content.

Now…let me ask you a question…

What would your reaction be? OBVIOUSLEY you would go to an other search engine. You are looking for quality information… you want to go to various web sites and find the best information.

This is precisely what the search engines are looking to provide you with…the best quality relevant information.

Therefore no search engine would list two identical contents on the same page…not even on page fifty or page hundred.

Now… you may ask… what am I trying to say? What am I trying to prove?

I am trying to dispel guru’s theory.

I am trying to ask the guru… how would the recipients of his content benefit, when there can be only one listing of his content on the search engine results page?

By now I am sure you can guess who’s web page content is going to be listed… you are right…HIS!

Why?

Because he is the originator of the content. The guru is the only one who’ll benefit from duplicate content.

Now you may ask…

How would search engine know who is the originator and why would only guru benefit?

The answer to both questions is the same…

The links in the guru’s distributed web page content point to guru’s web site. He just killed two birds with one stone.

To answer gurus question…why news agency’s web sites have very high (PR)? High ranking didn’t come from duplicate content, but from thousands of pages of original content and high quality backlinks and from the brand name they poses … small percentage of duplicate content won’t harm nor help them.

Brand name carries tremendous amount of relevance.

If Microsoft had millions of pages of duplicate content it would not affect their (PR). Microsoft has a GIANT BRAND NAME. Any content on Microsoft web pages will be considered relevant high quality content.

There is one thing I agree with the guru… “penalty” is a loaded word.

Search engines have specific criteria… the more of the criteria you fulfill the higher your page ranking and vice versa. You do not get penalized or de-indexed by not fulfilling criteria.

Penalty applies to the violation of the rules (when you do something illegal).

So…what is the most important rule when building web page content?

Do not try to “cheat” search engines!

Why?

  • No business can succeed by dishonesty (no matter how much money it makes (ask Enron boss).
  • Dishonesty doesn’t help anyone…without helping someone you cannot succeed.
  • Dishonesty will destroy the most important part of yourself.
  • Dishonesty is a contagious disease.
  • Designers of search engines are very clever (especially Google and Yahoo)…you cannot beat them (even when it seems you are). Do not listen to the gurus. GOOGLE READS THEIR BOOKS.

This is not a lecture in morality…this is about succeeding in business.

What is the way forward?

  • Build high quality original web page content.
  • Optimize them for highly targeted keywords or phrases.
  • Build your backlinks naturally (do not buy links).
  • Then build more content (1-3 pages per week)

Remember CONTENT is your way to success.

Why?

Your high quality unique content will attract many web site masters who will link to your web site. This will give you one way links which in turn translates in to higher (PR) by the search engines. The more unique content you write the more links you will acquire. Your web site becomes viral. The result is thousands of targeted visitors.
